A way to avoid explaining how you got something, or to make your friend feel better after they messed up badly.
‘I got this watch from this guy I know!’ (He stole it from his boss.)
‘I told my friend it was okay, I just didn’t tell him the whole truth.’
‘I made up a story to cover for him, and now he’s mad at me.’
