Gairaigo
Gairaigo is when English words get taken and turned into Japanese like they’re a bad joke. They’re used because Japanese doesn’t have a word for ‘soda’ and also because Americans are seen as cool, even if they can’t say the words right.
"I tried to say ‘soda’ and it came out as ‘soda’ but my friend called it ‘soda’ and I was confused."
Text: "You said ‘chips’ like it was a swear word."
Tweet: "I called my phone a ‘mobi’ and my friend thought I was talking about a mob."
